the Greeks and Romans had never bothered about the future but had tried to establish their paradise right here upon the earth…

then came the other extreme of the Middle Ages when man built himself a paradise beyond the highest clouds and turned this world into a vale of tears for high and low…

the Renaissance was not a political or a religious movement. It was a state of mind. In the Renaissance men no longer concentrated all of their thoughts and their efforts upon the blessed existence that awaited them in Heaven. They tried to establish their paradise upon this planet, and truth to tell, they succeeded in a remarkable degree.
